Nicaragua "Miraflor"

caramel apple • roasted nuts

Description

This delightful fair trade organic coffee is grown at approximately 5,000 feet in the lush Esteli Department (state), near Nicaragua's northern border with Honduras. We use a gentle medium roast to optimize the distinctive flavor notes of sweet caramel apple and roasted nuts in this clean, bright coffee.

Nicaragua "Miraflor" is sourced from family-owned farms organized around Promotora de Desarrollo Cooperativo de Las Segovias (PRODECOOP), an umbrella cooperative which operates a centrally-located dry mill facility and cupping lab where coffee is received, processed and selected for export. Two small primary cooperatives, Jose Benito Diaz (21 members) and Vicente Talabera (36 members), cultivate, harvest and process this specific coffee at farm level micro-mills before delivering dried parchment to PRODECOOP.

The consistent quality of Nicaragua "Miraflor" year after year is attributable in part to PRODECOOP (which uses fair trade funds to efficiently provide food security programs, producer financing, training, and technical assistance to improve coffee quality) and in part to the small cooperatives, which provide tailored grassroots organization and commitment for the communities where they operate.

This distinctive coffee is named after the nearby Miraflor Natural Reserve, which contains more than 200 species of orchids, growing in both the forest canopy and on the forest floor. The reserve is also home to over 200 species of birds, including the national bird of Nicaragua, the guardabarranco (turquoise-browed motmot).

Our Coffee

Our coffee is Fair Trade certified according to the Fair for Life standard, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives. In addition, the complete carbon footprint (from crop to cup) for our coffee has been offset with tree planting, which qualifies it as a CarbonFree Certified product by CarbonFund.org. All of our coffee is roasted to order and shipped fresh daily. We package in air-tight, foil-lined bags with one-way degassing valves to preserve freshness.
