Honduras "Congolón"
butter toffee • green apple • pear
Description
This fair trade organic coffee is grown at over 4,000 feet in the mountains of Western Honduras, bordering El Salvador. The region is a superb micro-climate for growing premium quality coffee under natural shade canopies as has been done here for generations. Using only the highly labor intensive techniques of organic farming, co-op members fertilize their farms with compost and combat plant pests and diseases with natural remedies.
Although not as well known for coffee cultivation as other Central American countries, Honduras produces some wonderful fair trade organic coffees, like this one, that are on par with the best of the best. We use a delicate medium roast to tease out the fresh flavor notes of butter toffee, green apple and pear from this clean, sweet coffee. Try it iced for a perfect afternoon refresher on a hot day!
The fair trade co-op that produces this coffee teaches its members organic farming techniques, soil sampling methods, and how to combat plant pests and diseases with natural remedies. Fair trade premiums are also used to provide scholarships for students in the community, develop potable water systems and supply medicines to local health care centers.
Our Coffee
Our coffee is Fair Trade certified according to the Fair for Life standard, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives. In addition, the complete carbon footprint (from crop to cup) for our coffee has been offset with tree planting, which qualifies it as a CarbonFree Certified product by CarbonFund.org. All of our coffee is roasted to order and shipped fresh daily. We package in air-tight, foil-lined bags with one-way degassing valves to preserve freshness.
