Peru "Río Negro Gesha"

honeydew melon • kiwi • candied lemon

Description

In our twenty years of roasting, this is the first time that we have been able to obtain a certified fair trade organic Gesha variety coffee and we are thrilled to share it with you! This very rare and highly sought-after coffee was grown at 5,500 feet in the Satipo province of the Junín region in central Peru. "Río Negro Gesha" is wonderfully bright, sweet and juicy with a silky body and lingering finish. This coffee features delightful floral aromatics with flavor notes of honeydew melon, kiwi and candied lemon that are accentuated by our delicate medium roast.

Gesha is a coffee variety that originated in the Gori Gesha forest of Ethiopia and was first collected for cultivation in the 1930s. It is a fickle and delicate plant to grow, with brittle branches and low yields, so the allure for coffee farmers is quality, not quantity of production. The Gesha variety regularly scores at the highest level for cup quality due to its wide spectrum of complex flavors and incredible aroma.

This outstanding Gesha was produced by Teodomira Flores Cartolin on Finca Las Flores and then washed using traditional wet fermentation processing. Teodomira is a member of the ACPC Pichanaki fair trade cooperative which formed in 2000 with just 39 members. Over the past two decades, cooperative membership has grown to nearly 350 producers spread over 5,000 acres. In addition to coffee, cooperative members grow ginger, citrus fruits, plantains, yucca, and cacao.

Our Coffee

Our coffee is Fair Trade certified according to the Fair for Life standard, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives. In addition, the complete carbon footprint (from crop to cup) for our coffee has been offset with tree planting, which qualifies it as a CarbonFree Certified product by CarbonFund.org. All of our coffee is roasted to order and shipped fresh daily. We package in air-tight, foil-lined bags with one-way degassing valves to preserve freshness.
