Colombia "Planadas"

Smooth notes of caramel, buttered toast and apricot

Description

This fair trade organic coffee is grown at over 5,000 feet in the lush foothills of the Central Andes in Tolima, Colombia. Incredibly sweet and juicy with a smooth body, this coffee features notes of caramel, buttered toast and apricot that are accentuated by our medium-dark roast.

For many years, Tolima has remained hidden in plain sight cradled between other well-known coffee growing regions because armed conflict and coca leaf production isolated small coffee producers and exposed them to high rates of violence. During this time the municipality of Planadas, located in the southernmost corner of Tolima, was surrounded by thousands of small-scale producers cultivating coffee on just a few acres of land intercropped with shade trees, bananas, corn, beans and sugarcane. As conflict has subsided in recent years, locally organized associations have taken the lead in creating market access for these producers.

La Asociación de Productores Ecológicos de Planadas (ASOPEP) was founded in 2013 with the mission:  "To be known as an association that creates opportunities for the personal growth of its members, protects the environment, innovates in commercial business processes and is always in the vanguard of specialty coffee producers worldwide." The 168 member families include 30 families where women are heads of household and manage the farming operations. Educational capacity building workshops are at the core of ASOPEP's program to ensure the long term sustainability of their success. While many coffee growing countries struggle with keeping young generations interested in coffee production, an impressive 30% of ASOPEP's farmer members are in their twenties or early thirties.

Our Coffee

Our coffee is Fair Trade certified according to the Fair for Life standard, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives. In addition, the complete carbon footprint (from crop to cup) for our coffee has been offset with tree planting, which qualifies it as a CarbonFree Certified product by CarbonFund.org. All of our coffee is roasted to order and shipped fresh daily. We package in air-tight, foil-lined bags with one-way degassing valves to preserve freshness.
